Life Goes On: How an Artspace Mends the Community, with Mr Zulfadhli Hilmi (SMU Alumnus)
The relationship between art and community is often seen as a given. However, it is also seen as one that is intangible. In this sharing, curator and researcher Zulfadhli Hilmi will present his long-term research collaboration with Patani Artspace, an arts community in Thailand's Deep South. The region has been muddled with issues on insurgency and separation from the Thai state for decades. Yet for a collective of young artists, they have navigated this discourse with aims to provide a space for mediation and revitalization. Understanding soft power, this group of artists has been returning a sense of agency to the community in rehabilitating their surroundings by providing a space where discourse can happen. His research aims to present the tangibility of their efforts and the impacts art can provide to a community.
